Local prepositions
Local prepositions are prepositions that refer to a place or to a movement. They answer 3 essential questions:
- Wo? (Where?)
- Wohin? (To where?)
- Woher? (Where from?)
When to use which preposition, you will learn in this table:

"Aus" or "von" ?
As you may have noticed, there are only 2 local prepositions to answer the question Woher?:
aus and von.
But when do you use which preposition? This trick will help you:
- If the question Wo? is answered with the preposition in, then the question Woher? is always answered with the preposition aus.
- If the question Wo? is not answered with the preposition in then the question Woher? is always answered with the preposition von.
