Demonstrative Pronouns

Demonstrative pronouns are short words that refer to a specific word in the sentence and emphasize it in the statement, for example:

"Dieses Auto fährt am schnellsten." (This car drives the fastest.)

"Solche Bücher lese ich gerne." (I like reading such books.)

They either replace an article or a noun. Let's now look at the most common demonstrative pronouns in German.

The most important Demonstrative Pronouns

1. dieser, diese, dieses (diese – Plural)

"Dieser" is a frequently used demonstrative pronoun. It usually stands in front of a noun, where an article would normally stand.

Examples:

"Dieser Mann ist sehr nett." (This man is very nice.)

"Diese Leute sind unsere Freunde." (These people are our friends.)

"Welches Auto fährt am schnellsten? – Dieses." (Which car drives the fastest? - This one.)

2. der, die, das, (die ­– Plural)

The demonstrative pronouns "der", "die", "das" stand directly in front of nouns (just like certain articles) or alone. They must be emphasized when speaking.

Examples:

"Mit dem Fahrrad kommst du schneller voran." (You get ahead faster with the bicycle.)

"Wo ist mein Hut? Der liegt auf dem Tisch." (Where is my hat? It is on the table.)

3. jener, jene, jenes (jene – Plural)
